Like the best Reich compositions, the vocal loop evolves almost imperceptibly over time such that the distance between each word-Begin… Game Over…–becomes longer and longer, occasionally shifting to include geometric terms and small bursts of encouragement-Begin, Game Over, Begin, Game Over, Begin, Line, Excellent, Game Over, Begin, Line, Triangle, Square, Excellent, Game Over, Begin, Line, Game Over, Begin, Game Over.Īs the vocal components of the piece grow farther apart, the interstitial blasts of music become the more dominant part of the composition, and eventually take over entirely, to reveal a remarkably propulsive, dare-I-say inspiring soundtrack composed by Chipzel. The one you hear first is a Steve Reich-esque minimalist vocal piece, wherein a mildly robotic female voice intones “Begin… Game Over…Begin… Game Over” punctuated by short (3-5 second) blasts of frantic, claustrophobic chiptune music. Super Hexagon, the new game from Terry Cavanagh (the maker of one of my favorite games of the last several years, VVVVVV), really has two soundtracks.
